Dinner is served

This post is mainly for the "women of the house".

Do you make a cooked dinner every night of the week? Do you do all the cooking in your house? Is every meal a well balanced, well planned meal?
I cook at least five - six nights per week. Usually the other night is pizza or chinese. Most meals are a meat, a vegetable and a starch. Sometimes it's just burgers or hotdogs.
The other night I decided to do a "catch as catch can" as my mother used to call them. Everyone was on their own. There were frozen dinners in the freezer, lunch meat in the frig, leftovers, eggs, cereal....whatever.
I never did this before, and my family stood there looking at me like I had two heads. They survived the night, but it made me feel guilty for neglecting my responsibilities as a mom.
Do you ever do a "everybody for themselves" dinner?

every single night....but it's only myself that I have to be concerned about

Sometimes I'll cook a well-balanced meal, but then most of it goes to waste.

HOWEVER, I am off today, so I put a pork roast in my crock pot when I got up (at noon!), and I will make some mashed taters and a salad to complement it. That's about as good as I can do when it's just me and the effort doesn't seem worth the result.

i used to make a very nice dinner everynight when my kids were home.meat, starch, veggie, dessert. now that they are grown, bigjoe and i eat out alot. too much sometimes. but after working all day unless i can throw something on the grill, anything elaborate takes too long.

Schell, You're a working mom, I think you have every right not to cook when you don't feel like it and not feel guilty about it. I certainly can barely manage to cook for myself, I can't imagine having to cook for a family when I come home from work.

Now my mom had a nice hot well balanced meal waiting for me every night, but she didn't work outside of the home.

We call it "fend for yourself" night. It's very good and you should enforce it.

PS--We do FFY about once every ten days. We're trying to be better about not eating out, so I've been making dinner, a main course, a salad, a vegetable. Tonight we had tortellini and salad. Last night we had chicken stir fry and basmati rice.

Good God. I'm not even going to tell you what we do for meals. Schell, you give working women a bad name if you cook dinner every night.

IMHO JJ & Braden should be doing some of the cooking!

I teach from 6:30 - 9:30 pm two nights a week--the rest of the family is in charge of supper those nights. SIL because of her pickiness is often on her own for food. I can't say we're good at the balanced part, but we're working on it.

We go in fits and spurts. Some weeks I cook every night, others we eat out every night. That said, H and I are usually only in the same place about an average of 15 to 20 days a month.

We've been really bad and eating out almost constantly this Summer so a couple of weeks ago we decided to eat home more often and . . . it's hard thinking of something to cook every night. A couple times a month H will volunteer to cook but his repertoire is limited to: spaghetti; grilling steaks; grilled cheese sandwiches and soup; Mac-and-cheese and hot dogs; and breakfast (eggs, pancakes, etc.). We rarely have fend for yourself nights.

But, both my brothers are the sole cooks in their families and my younger brother started something that I thought was a really good idea. He has two kids and one night a week one of them has to cook dinner. It's been great for the kids cuz they've learned to cook and enjoy it. They look up recipes, make the shopping lists, plan the meals, etc. You should institute that! Teach those boys how to cook. Braden one week, JJ the next.

i cook 2 nights a week. rest of the week is fend for yourself as my guy works nights at community colleges. we eat out a lot, but i don't feel bad as it's usually cheaper than shopping/cooking. also, i don't feel well enough to cook, it's just too hot. i grew up with my mom cooking every night until us kids were old enough to cook, then we did all the cooking ever night of the week. maybe once or twice a month my mom would do take out on saturday or friday. one night would be leftover night though. if i let my guy cook for us, we'd starve.

if you do all the shopping, cooking, cleaning and you work, what does everyone else do?

This is probably unusual but I was cooking meals for my family when I was still a young boy . No one forced me to , it was just something I decided to do and I learned to cook .

AS a boy it was just things like a beans and hot dog cassarole or a girl scout stew .

As I got older I cooked more elaborate things .

I've mentioned before when I was married I did all the cooking and the food buying .

Anyhow , I learned to cook and to this day often cook something for myself tho I often find it easier now to buy foods that are precooked ( dino, frozen dinners , etc)

I think it's a good idea for everyone to know how to cook . At least simple things .
